A customer in Arkansas purchased mountain laurel material to build branch and log railings to go with this amazing rustic home.
Arkansas Log Home and Branch Railing
The railings turned out great! Everyone thought I was nuts paying for some “sticks” until they saw the result. I have since built a gate for the top of the stairs out of nothing but the sticks, a couple hinges and a latch. We feel it fits the style of the house and the setting perfect! Thanks for checking in, and feel free to use any of the pictures.
This intricate wood railing is installed on the front balcony of a home in Wisconsin. This type of balcony is called a Juliet Balcony after the scene in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and is also sometimes called a widow’s walk. Widow’s walks are often seen on coastal homes in the Northeast, and the lore is that the wives of mariners could observe the sea from their tiny balconies and would watch for their husbands’ ships on the horizon. Some wives would spend years watching in vain for the return of a sailor lost at sea.

Mountain Laurel Handrails recently installed a new deck for this beautiful lake home in Alabama. The homeowner was thrilled with the new railings, and even provided photographs of the finished deck. This brand new sturdy deck overlooks a beautiful lake. Mountain Laurel Handrails also installed beautifully finished rails with natural branch detailing around the deck.
The homeowner was thrilled with her new railings:
Hi – the rails turned out great. I’m trying to talk my husband into replacing all the railing around the house. He said no but I’m still working on him. I’ve attached lots of pictures.
I wanted to get some insights into what other professionals are thinking about when designing a deck. So I contacted some of the leaders of the home design, construction and product industries a single question:
“What is the best deck design tip you’d like to share?”
The responses were interesting and included many good suggestions to consider when designing a deck or selecting. (Here’s some help to finding the best railing design ideas.) When you’re done reading, let me know which of these deck design tips you thought were the best or what we didn’t include.

Composite lumber is an interesting and unique way to update and decorate your home. Composite lumber is made by combining real wood with plastic materials. This creates a natural wood look that’s able to hold up to the elements very well. This is ideal for outdoor decorating in areas that are open to snow, rain, and wind, which can strip down natural wood over time. Many deck floors and sidings are made with composite lumber as well, and a composite lumber handrail matches that look better than natural wood, which can feel unfinished when next to composite lumber.
This Mountain Laurel Handrail was built with composite lumber to match the composite decking on this beautiful deck located in Boulder, Colorado. The product used was Tamko Evergrain 2×4 in the Weatherwood color. The homeowners used Mountain Laurel Handrail as an accent piece to complement their metal baluster railing. An exciting visual look is created by combining different materials in this way.
