Balcony Railing

This balcony railing was installed in a Texas “barndominium”, a large open barn-type building that has been converted for residential use. Wood Railing worked with the homeowner while this home was still in the beginning construction phase. This close collaboration leads to a well-executed finale. If you have questions or want specific advice on your project, contact us and we’d be happy to help so that your results are just as pleasing as this balcony railing.

Here’s what the homeowner had to say when she sent her pictures of the completed work.

Hi James,

Hope these pictures work for you. We think the balcony railing adds so much to the Texas barndominium look. We really like them and get many positive comments.

Thanks for being so easy to work with through the process.

Balcony Railings

This balcony railing is decorated with icicle lights for the Christmas holiday. I know that this post is a little late for the holiday season but this is just such a great looking railing. The dark stained beam and handrail opens up to the natural pine tongue and groove ceiling. Those icicle lights add a festive look and the three-blade fan adds a nice touch. The balcony looks like a there’s some furniture set up and lamps for lounging and reading a book or just curling up for a short nap.

Handrail Design

handrail-design

Choosing a handrail design for your home can be a challenging process. The owners of this home wanted to add a unique element to their great room. Mountain Laurel Handrail is the perfect accent for this application! The large sliding glass door lets in light and views of the outdoors, and the branch railing continues the line of sight from the outside with the organic shapes of the forest. Each of these handrails designs is unique and totally unlike any other since the sticks and branches lend unique characteristics and style to the piece.

Here, the homeowners opted to leave the cedar unfinished to provide a nice contrast to the existing painted drywall and white cabinetry. The lines of these railings add excitement to the aesthetic of the space and make a lovely foil to the other elements of the room. The couch with nice view of the fireplace, looks like a great place to relax, read a book and enjoy the afternoon sunshine!

перила из веток Railing of the Branches

Thanks to Google Analytics, I learned today that the woven branch style is also popular in Russia, where it’s called “перила из веток”. According to Google Translate, this means ‘Railing of the Branches’ which seems to me to be a great description of the style. Of course, it figures that in a place with such a large amount of forest, and a grand tradition of log homes and woodworking, that this would also be a popular style. And, there’s plenty of time in the winter to work on these kinds of crafts!

This picture is a sample of Russian craftsmanship. I’m curious to know what kind of wood they used. I have absolutely no idea how to pronounce перила из веток but I would like to try! I’d also like to hear the thoughts of all my Russian readers in the comments section!

Deck Railing Designs

This video shows some interesting deck railing designs to consider for your own home. Break away from boring, staid designs and move to something exciting and sensual! Incorporate the shapes of nature in your deck and enjoy the beauty all year long!

Stair Railings

Many homes feature a grand staircase as the focal point of a great room. And oftentimes these stairs are finished with precise woodworking. But too often, the stair railings get overlooked and the balusters end up as boring pickets or turned spindles going up and down from tread to banister. A thoughtful staircase design acknowledges that an intricate and beautiful balustrade is the most important factor in the look of a stairway.

Here are some pictures of another example of how stair railings are the centerpiece of the great room. The front door to this home is located at the foot of the stair, so as visitors enter, they are greeted with the sight of this rustic wood stair railing. The staircase design draws the eye upward toward the balcony handrail and then further into the room where the viewer is greeted by cathedral ceilings and tongue-in-groove pine boards. The use of two different colors on the lower and upper levels also adds to the visual excitement and makes for an intersting tableau.

Wood Stair Railing

A truly magnificent staircase begins like any other, with a well-planned staircase design. The overall style of the home is the first consideration. Some modern architecture calls for glass balusters and floating treads, while some old-world or Tuscan designs might be better served with wrought iron handrail. But for log home, timber frame and other rustic and mountain styled buildings, there is no better choice than Mountain Laurel Handrails. These custom guard rails can be modified to match any staircase design although they are especially suited for stair parts, treads, and risers made of woods like oak, hickory, bamboo or reclaimed wood like heart pine.

After a wood species is chosen for treads, riser, and skirt board, the staircase design can move on to architectural aspects including trim details. Each section of Mountain Laurel Handrail is an elaborate trim detail in and of itself a testament to nature’s beauty crafted by a skilled artisan. These unique stair railings accent the grandeur of any home and give your visitors something to talk about!

Deck Balusters

Mountain laurel handrails feature the most unique deck balusters that you’ve seen. Sticks and branches from mountain laurel trees are saved from land clearing activities and repurposed into rustic works of art. These branch handrails take their shape from each individual stick.Nature crafts the forms and it is the artisan’s work to meld them into forms that are pleasing to the eye. Since each stick has its own shape, the work takes on its own form and the carpenter just guides itinto place somewhat like a sailboat captain has to work the wind or a sawyer has to know how the log will cut. The skilled craftsmen at Wood Railing take nature’s forms and create deck balusters that will have your neighbor’s asking, “Where did you get that handrail?”

Deck Lighting

Standing on the deck  overlooking your yard, deck lighting is an easy and popular method to improve your enjoyment of your deck experience. These lights accent and highlight the special features of your deck. With many different choices, deck lighting adds beauty and elegance to your home.

Deck Lighting

One type of deck lighting is post cap lights. These are basically a light encased in a post cap. There are many different choices of materials for these: some are plastic, some have copper or a painted metal, and there are also some fantastic glass shapes in art deco and modern shapes. Some post cap lights incorporate a small solar cell into the cap so that the light will be powered by battery at night and charge during the day. If the lights are not solar powered, a low voltage system will have to be installed preferably by a skilled electrician.

Putting lights on the sides of the deck railing is another manner to install deck lighting. Again, these light fixtures come in many styles, shapes, designs and materials so there is definitely something to match your home.  These lights can be installed on the sides of the posts, on the face of the railing or on the underside of the top or bottom rails. In any case, these lights will add some exciting accents and shadows to your deck.

Deck lighting can also be installed on the deck stairs. These lights are a super-helpful addition for safety since navigating stairs at night can be treacherous and dangerous. After these are installed, the stairs will be much easier to navigate. A good addition here is to install a light for the banister so that it is also visible.
