Wood Railing

Hewn logs are cut with an adze or axe and have a rough look. This style is somewhere between a milled D-log and a whole round log. It’s a traditional style that pairs nicely with Mountain Laurel Handrails as seen in this porch railing picture. These log home deck railingswent to Missouri. The small fans installed on the porch are an interesting break from the staid ceiling fan. The red trim on the deck is mimicked on the top rail which looks like a 1×8. Beginning with design, this house pulled it all together and has the best handrail!

The deck railings chosen for this lake house in Texas were Mountain Laurel Handrails! These railings make a great statement with the craftsman style siding and architecture on this home. The deck balusters are branches in the railing and really set this deck ahead of others on the lake!

The homeowner on this project sent pictures of the work in progress. The sun shines a little bit brighter when Mountain Laurel Handrails arrive and are uncrated, on the left. On the right, the crew sets the sections out in front of the posts for organizing and cutting to fit.

On the left, sections are ready to be cut. Since each section must be cut to fit, it’s important for the saw station to be near the work as shown in the picture on the right, which, incidentally, also pictures the best double bevel, compound sliding miter saw that DeWalt made.

Stairs Railing

The carpenters on this project did a great job with this stairs railing section. Notice first how the top of the stair handrail and the flat handrail on the deck line up on either side of the post. The carpenters also had to modify this section to accommodate the angled stairs and the newel post being set back in so far from the edge.

Railing for Log Home

This Mountain Laurel Handrail was installed on a log home. This deck is so nicely decorated, it just looks so enjoyable. I love the green ferns and the red and white deck furniture to give some color and contrast to the wood deck and logs on the house. The firepit looks like a great space to enjoy the company of friends on a cool evening with a good sized fire roaring to keep you toasty! There really is no better choice for a log home deck railing.

Mountain Laurel Deck Railing is the most artistic of all the deck railing designs. Made from branches from the mountain laurel tree, each section is a work of art unlike any other!

Beautiful Deck Railing

Long spans of handrail are not advisable since regular posts are required for strength and support. These intermediate posts that hold up a handrail and not, for example, a porch are called newel posts. Here, we used a mountain laurel log about four inches in diameter as a newel post.

The stairs and railing on this deck make a huge visual impact and are a highly visible element on this deck. Another custom feature on this project is the complete lattice behind the stairs eliminating the diagonal line of a banister.

This deck actually features two custom newel posts made out of mountain laurel. These are relatively difficult to install and are not a project for an inexperienced carpenter.
