Branches In a Treehouse Railing and Other Great Ideas For Use

Perhaps you might have seen treehouses when you were younger, or maybe you had one in the backyard of your home. The treehouse could be an excellent haven for kids to play around in as if it was a unique property that only the kids would hold. The wooden planks around the surface, the small windows, and the rough flooring surface would make for a spot unlike any other. Treehouses are still around today, but those models are different from what you might have come across all those years ago. Today’s treehouses feature unique bodies and layouts that are unlike anything you might expect to find. There are many outstanding things that you can add to a modern-day treehouse. These include many features that add to the functionality and value to the house. Each point you add can improve upon the quality, aesthetic feel, and general fun that can only come from such an added space outside your home. Of course, the most prominent things you can add to a treehouse are beautiful railings that come with unique Mountain Laurel Handrails as branch accents. Each branch feature includes unique bends and curls. The twists and turns of the branches produce a memorable sight.

Adding Branches To a Railing

The use of branches in a treehouse railing can add to the property’s style. The Mountain Laurel branches look like what you would see in an untouched wood. These branches have grown for years and have moved around in many directions. Adding branches to a treehouse railing will produce a natural look that fits in well. The branches snake their way around one another, creating a natural barrier and railing look. The wood bodies come in many thicknesses and lengths, but they all go together in creating a specific and firm look. The rail keeps the treehouse safe while keeping the space from being a falling hazard. The rail is also useful as an outdoor wall that determines the flooring area your treehouse will take up. The surface will blend in well with the other wood accents found around your space. It is true that many treehouse railing designs can come with attractive metal or steel layouts. But adding a railing with tree branches incorporated in the body could add something unique. You will be reminded of the beautiful natural scenes of the area as you plan this out. The layout of a treehouse railing can include various branches that match up with the tree space that the house is built around. While the small abode wraps itself along a sturdy tree, the railings will incorporate wood form similar surfaces. The mix of natural brown tones produces a light style. Furthermore, every treehouse is unique due to the terrain and trees upon which it is built. And just like a treehouse, every branch baluster in the railing shown above is one-of-a-kind. This is another reason why branches in a treehouse make such an amazing and whimsical sight.

Look For Mountain Laurel Branches

One of the better treehouse railing ideas to utilize entails adding Mountain Laurel branches to your space. These branches are distinct for being flexible and unique in style. The branches will twist and bend to form various shapes. The natural design of the Mountain Laurel branch is something unlike anything else in the wild. A branch will grow from a base and bend around many surfaces. The layout produces a firm body that bends all over the place. The branches vary in thickness as well. These points stretch and move around with some of them moving up and down quite well. A large grouping of Mountain Laurel branches can be gathered, sanded down, and trimmed to fit along the body of your treehouse railing. The design is easy to adjust and control to your liking. The Mountain Laurel branches in your tree house deck railing will stir your imagination. The stretching wood spots will remind you of the unique things and surroundings you might experience while out in the wild.

What About a Treehouse Railing Net?

You can always add a railing net if desired. A net will feature a series of rope materials that are woven together to form a net shape. The cover keeps things from slipping out of the treehouse. Also, the uniform weave adds a dense and beautiful body all around. The net will remind you of the wire netting you might see outside a baseball park or around a fence, except the ropes will look more natural. A nautical effect may be noticed too. You must look at how well the railing net functions with a dense weave so it blends well and adds a nice style. The design might not be as unique as what you’d get out of a branch railing, but the style does add a classy look when all is considered.

How High Up Should the Railing Be?

The height of the railing is a point to note as well. The good news about Mountain Laurel branches and rope net materials is that they can be as tall or wide as needed. You can build a treehouse railing height of around three to four feet to produce a good design that keeps people protected while also providing enough room to lean on. Your railing could be easily visible as people notice the beautiful scene all around the space.

Add a Rope Bridge

Don’t forget about the other accents you can include with your treehouse to provide a more detailed and thorough appearance around your space. You can also add a treehouse rope railing to your design if you wish. A rope railing can stretch from a porch to the treehouse. You can adjust the treehouse deck railing based on the change in height between the porch and the house floor. Adding a rope bridge with included wood planks will create a unique style to the treehouse. The design will convey feelings of a person going on a big adventure as one enters the space. This will look like what you’d see on a dock near a boat or another unique naval space. What’s also great is that the rope material will be sturdy enough to handle even the hardest weather conditions. Rope materials are known for being tight and dense. You can also get a rope material tied up in many bends and layouts to produce a firm body that fits well. The thick cords and knots on the ends of the ropes add a nice touch. The twists and bends produced on the ropes are also outstanding features to note. Designing a treehouse offers parents and their children the opportunity to be creative. Here, a rope bridge with planks connects the treehouse platform to the home, as if one is going to embark on a great adventure. Thick cords and knots also add an awesome touch. Lit-up with a string of lights, kids and teens would surely find this private space a great place to gather and talk, play board games or even climb a tree. Notice the footholds inserted along the tree’s trunk—another surprise in this fun filled hideaway. From the plank floor to the tree trunk and twig railing, you can see in the picture above these elements used to build the treehouse display a natural and pleasing flow.

Include Lighting All Around

The next thing to find for your treehouse is a good lighting setup. The lights can include many traditional bulbs that are strung along the top parts of the treehouse. The bulbs look like something you’d see around the ceiling of a fun restaurant or party deck. They may also remind you of what you’d see during the Christmas season, although they will be a little more controlled depending on what you plan on using out here.

Look For Windows

Some windows may spread alongside your unique treehouse railings or other features in that building. These windows can come with traditional wood panels that match up with the rest of the treehouse. Some models can be adjusted by being opened or closed to your liking. These windows may be useful for when you’re trying to keep rain and other outside issues from getting into the treehouse. You can produce windows that are similar to what you’d see around the outside part of your home. But whatever you choose, you’ll find it is not hard to add classy windows that add a good look. Here, the homeowner’s son is enjoying his tree top hangout as he leans against the handrails. And yet, this room certainly is big enough to invite adults.

Check the Roof

You have to see that the roof fits in well with the rest of the treehouse. You’ll have to add a roof with enough of an overhang to keep leaves, rain, and other outside items from entering the treehouse. Your roof can look just like what you might have on the top of your house. You’ll have a nice series of eaves and panel tiles to produce a traditional style.

How About Added Plants?

Create a natural garden-like effect with some plants. A few fancy plants add a natural look while producing a light feeling all around. These may come with wood or rope basket accents to keep the plants secure. You can add some of these plants around the outside parts of your treehouse railings as well. A beautiful plant bed adds a gentle and unique accent you are bound to love sporting.

Don’t Forget the General Usage

Think about how you’re going to use your treehouse in general as well. A treehouse could be designed for use as a guest room. The body would require an extra bit of lighting and some helpful windows and coverings to keep outside conditions from being much of a hassle. Your treehouse may also work as a recreational or social room that can go alongside your existing patio. But whatever you utilize, you should see that your spot has a classy look that produces a beautiful and firm body when all is considered. Anything with plenty of lights and decorative features, not to mention Mountain Laurel branch railings, will be a plus.

Treehouses: Not Just for Kids Anymore

These rustic abodes are becoming vacation hot spots for grown-ups, couples and families alike. Today, folks even build treehouses to be their primary residence. And of course, Laurel railings would be perfect for those applications too.
Treehouse in the woods
Treehouse in the woods

Incorporating the Tree Trunk

The odds are your treehouse will have a trunk in the middle. The trunk is essential for producing enough support the keep the structure upright and less likely to shake around. You can add some extra railings around the trunk if desired. But you could also add a few cuts around the floor to allow a small bit of space to go between the floor and the trunk’s edge. This could allow for an extra bit of air to move through the floor. You could also include footholds around the trunk for an aesthetic look. Those holds are not necessarily for climbing, but they could be used for positioning your hands around when relaxing in the space.

Check On the Door

You should also look at the door that you add to your treehouse. The door can serve as a nice opening that goes in between the rail surfaces. You could add some Mountain Laurel accents around the bottom part of a wood door. These would go perfectly with the accents found around the treehouse railings. A beautiful wood tone will create a welcoming space that invites the people outside into your spot.

A Final Note

You’ll have to look at how well you’re going to get a railing for treehouse use among other features. The treehouse that you design will look outstanding when everything is planned out right. You’ll find that a treehouse masters railing can look attractive and dynamic when arranged well enough. Look around to see what choices you can come across and that you can find a unique style that is unlike anything else you might find out there. If you and your family are drawing up plans for a one-of-a-kind treehouse, consider adding the perfect complement–uniqu Mountain Laurel Handrails.

Handrails for Stairs
Handrails for Stairs

These incredible handrails for stairs were custom built to exact specifications and then shipped to South Carolina for installation. Mountain Laurel Handrails are available nationwide in preassembled and easy to install sections. Contact today for more information and to get started on your project.

When the homeowner sent pictures, this is what he said:

We love it and get lots of compliments!

— Bryant
This homeowner opted to go with pine lumber on the handrail to match the pine shiplap on the interior walls. The newel post at the bottom of the stairs is set to the outside of the tread. This makes the bottom rail of this stair handrail set outside the stair stringer. This is the preferred installation method since it hides the unsightly triangle gap created if the handrail is set in line with the stair stringer and has to sit on the leading edge of the nosing of the tread instead. The homeowner wanted a stair banister to match the handrails for this stairs and since the handrails are of branches, of course that the banister should be as well. The carpenters on this project did a skillful job of joining the mountain laurel sticks that were provided to them. I especially love the step up about halfway up the stairs. The on site carpenters are definitely proficient woodworkers to recognize the innate utility of each piece of wood. A custom piece from Mountain Laurel Handrails will add unique style to your home. This incredible branch banister is the unique architectural element that defines this stair. At the top of the stairs, you’re greeted by a Mountain Laurel Handrail in the sunburst pattern with a Mountain Laurel Newel Post to finish the installation.

Though the long railing was quite a challenge for the carpenters, we are quite happy with them. Thank you.

— Jody

Hi James,

Attached are 3 pictures. I really don’t feel they do your beautiful handiwork justice because the railing is going down a basement stair and the lighting is not too good. If you ever wanted to come over and photograph for yourself that would be wonderful. We’ve used the wall over the railing as a kind of Folk Art Gallery and everyone always comments on the railing. Let me know what you think. I loved looking at the new website. The home in Vermont is just gorgeous.

The end piece which “swoops” is my favorite feature. We love it.

And Now For Something Completely Different

Like they say on Monty Python…

If you missed the first post of the finished, but not yet installed, custom designed and built wavy stair banister, then you’re in for a real treat today since I have the pictures of the installed piece. It came out AWESOME! There’s no doubt that this is a one-of-a-kind, work-of-art that was a real collaboration between the homeowner’s vision and the master woodworkers in our workshop.

Wavy Wood Banister Installed

On the left is the view from the bottom of the staircase looking up towards the landing. This is the longest of two runs of the banister. This piece was about 11′ long. The other piece was much shorter for only two steps at the top of the landing. Careful measurements and communication allowed our workshop to draw a model from which a cardboard template was cut out. The template was stepped off over the length of the blank piece. Once the lines were drawn on the lumber, the power tools came out and sawdust and wood chips started flying! A circular saw and belt sander were used for rough cutting of the blank, which was then finished to the desired 2″ diameter. The homeowner is going to stain and finish it once her color scheme is final.

Here’s what the homeowner had to say about her project:

The banister is finally up! YEY!!! It looks great. See the pictures. I think in reality it looks even nicer than on the pictures …. I have to finish my stairs first and then I will finish the banister. I think I may tint it to golden oak color and put teak oil. Thanks for all your help!

Glancing through the window pops of violet, mauve, orange and yellow dot the deck. It’s almost as if this festive fall display becomes a part of the home’s interior. In this cozy country setting, vertical pickets or metal rods just wouldn’t offer the same visual appeal as this railing’s intertwining twigs covered in bark. To enhance to the railing and deck décor, metal caps accent the top of every newel post. The homeowner then adds whimsical wicker furniture to create an inviting outdoor space to relax, entertain and enjoy!

Balcony Railing

An Important Architectural Element

Many modern homes incorporate some type of great room and loft to create an open feel to the living space. This means that there is often a balcony railing that is prominent in the great room or living area. Take your time selecting the railing idea that is right for you.

Balcony Handrail
Balcony Handrail

The balcony handrail is an architectural element of a home’s interior design that is often overlooked by designer, builder and homeowner. The staircase leading up is often one of the very first pieces of the home that a new visitor will see. It is important to make a strong statement with these architectural elements that will dazzle viewers.

What Type of Balcony Railings to Use

Mountain Laurel Handrails use natural wood balusters to create wondrous designs from branches that have grown into a variety of shapes. This design incorporates a balcony handrail which connects with the stair railing and leads into the cathedral ceiling.

Balcony Railing Design Choices

Your architectural selections makes a strong statement about design choices and interior stair railing kits from us are a great choice! In many homes, the staircase is the most visible architectural element inside the home. As it rises from floor to floor, the viewer’s eye is drawn upward towards the heavens. Often the stairs will be accompanied by a stone or rock fireplace in a great room. This large living space is the central gathering point of a home.

Many homes feature a grand staircase as the focal point of a great room. And oftentimes these stairs are finished with precise woodworking. But too often, the stair hand rails get overlooked and the balusters end up as boring pickets or turned spindles going up and down from tread to banister. A thoughtful staircase design acknowledges that an intricate and beautiful balustrade is the most important factor in the look of a stairway.

Stair Railing

Stairs Railing

The stairs lead up to a balcony where the handrail of the stairs continues. Many formal designs feature vertical balusters that are evenly spaced. Sometimes these wood balusters will be turned with designs seemingly carved into them.

These pictures show of how the staircase and balcony is the centerpiece of the great room. The front door to this home is located at the foot of the stair, so as visitors enter, they are greeted with the sight of these interesting features. The staircase design draws the eye upward toward the balcony handrail and then further into the room where the viewer is greeted by cathedral ceilings and tongue-in-groove pine boards. The use of similar colors on the lower and upper levels also adds to the visual excitement and ties the room together.

Wooden Balcony Railings for Wooden Homes

The first thing you see as you enter this home is the stair railing and it leads to the balcony handrail which is also made in the same style. The tongue and groove lumber on the cathedral ceiling required expert woodworking precision to ensure a close fit. Take a close look at the pictures and you’ll see all the special modifications that the carpenters made to produce quality finished work.

Balcony Handrail Designs and Code Regulations

Balcony handrail design, just like most parts of a home or new construction, are governed by different code regulations. These code requirements are set in most places by the building code produced by the International Code Council. These requirements are then adopted and modified by local jurisdictions.

The handrail height code in most places is between 36″ and 42″. The balcony handrail system provided by Mountain Laurel Handrails comes in sections that are typically 31″ tall. With a 3.5″ space from the finish floor and a 1.5″ thick board on the top, the finish height is 36″. If you want something taller than this, just let us know.

Yellow Pine for Log Home

The homeowner liked the look of yellow pine lumber and they already had a lot of wood in the home which made this rustic stair railing the crowning jewel in this home. Many homes incorporate different kinds of wood and it’s important to keep everything in a home matching nicely. This can be a tricky proposition in either new construction or remodeling. Other material options include wrought iron , glass panels or balusters, regular wood balusters made of 2×2 boards.

Lumber Options for Balcony Handrail and Stairs Railing

Our master carpenters in the workshop can help with some of these choices. Lumber is one of the most common modifications to an order as homeowners and contractors try to match the new or existing lumber. This yellow pine option installed in a log home remodel in the North Georgia mountains shows how keeping the lumber palette limited can blend the whole project together for great final results.

There is great diversity in the different lumber species. Even cutting the same tree in different ways results in wood that looks differently. The typical lumber for Mountain Laurel Handrails is red cedar. This lumber ranges from light pink to dark brown with knots. Clear cedar which has no knots is also available for a premium price. Redwood, which is similar to cedar and is apparently common the West Coast, is quite expensive on the East Coast where it is special order.

Unique Balcony Handrail for a Unique Home

This handrail installation made this home extra special and unique. But Mountain Laurel Handrails aren’t the only type of unique stairway railing that is a good match for a mountain home. If you’re building a log home, or timber frame, there are a few options. Many homes built in the craftsman style will have strong horizontal elements in the woodwork and intricate, built up columns to create a craftsman motif.

Depending on the style that you’re looking for, you’ll have some choices to make. But choosing a bold statement for your inside handrails is sure to make a strong impression! Especially for a log home or a mountain home with lots of wood ceilings and hardwood floors like the one pictured here, natural wood is the perfect match for pine ceilings and hardwood flooring. Contact Today with your project details to get started!

Here’s what the homeowner had to say when she sent her pictures of the completed work.

Hi James,
Hope these pictures work for you. We think the balcony railing adds so much to the Texas barndominium look. We really like them and get many positive comments. Thanks for being so easy to work with through the process.

The homeowner decorated with icicle lights for the Christmas holiday. I know that this post is a little late for the holiday season but this is just such a great looking railing. The dark stained beam and handrail opens up to the natural pine tongue and groove ceiling. Those icicle lights add a festive look and the three-blade fan adds a nice touch. Morning Sun on the Backyard Deck in Georgia

The morning sun on the backyard deck captures a serene scene in the woods, not to mention the harmonious beauty of natural branch railings.

Certainly, decks are not just for relaxing with morning coffee. This backyard deck is spacious, nearly spanning the full length of the home.  As such, this outdoor space offers plenty of room for intimate gatherings with family and entertaining friends.

Notice in the center of the deck’s perimeter, an unexpected extension makes an attractive focal point. This spot would be perfect for a comfy, cushioned bench or perhaps a dinning set.

Here is a close-up view of all the eye-catching details that create this railing system. It is particularly striking from an architectural and visual perspective. The reason is the way twisting twigs project themselves against the linear and rectangular elements in the railing and deck, such as the handrails and floorboards.  At the same time, the Laurel branches blend beautifully with birch and pine trees in the woodsy landscape.

Clearly, the Laurel railing is more than just a functional or safety element on a raised deck. It’s also a natural piece of art, as craftsmen arrange each unique branch along the sections creatively.

So if you’re planning on building a deck,  why not explore the many possibilities available for branch handrail designs that convey the natural beauty of the great outdoors.  And you can enjoy the morning sun on the backyard deck!

Come and pull up a chair on this deck and gaze through the rustic deck balusters at the forest beyond. The deck furniture looks like a good place to sit down and enjoy a quiet moment or perhaps share a time with friends. check out this page for more ideas on home decorating One of my favorite aspects of mountain laurel handrail are the shadows that each branch casts and how it changes through the day and through the seasons. As the sun moves, each shadow moves and morphs.

Here’s what the homeowner had to say:

We have finally gotten the deck painted and everyone loves the Laurel railings. Thank you for making our backyard come alive!

Mountain Laurel Handrails are a unique option that are sure to make people take notice of their artistic beauty and undeniable character. Since each section is individually crafted, no two are ever the same and each takes on its own distinct form to create a railing system unmatched in visual interest.

These Deck Railings were installed in the Atlanta GA area. The structure over this deck is a pergola, which is open framing members with no solid roof on top. The organic shapes of each handrail and the welcoming outdoor furniture create an inviting atmosphere that makes the smell of charcoal and BBQ seem to float through the air. The forest beyond blends into the edge of the deck and the natural forms in the handrails help to blur the distinction between the built and natural environments.

The pergola and rustic deck railings are a hit! The angled sections demonstrate the skill of the on-site carpenters. Wood Railing creations make this deck unlike any other in the neighborhood! How about a miniature version of the umbrella on the deck floating in a sea of ice cubes? I think I smell the grill again…

There’s just something striking about dark lines on natural wood in these railings designed for a rustic great room. One reason this room leaves a great impression is the homeowner’s interesting use of contrast—an essential interior design principle. And while contrast combines competing colors, textures and shapes, when done correctly as seen here, it all fits together beautifully.

Dark Lines on Natural Wood—A Lesson in Contrast

Beyond being beautiful, contrasting color brings attention to the focal point of the room. Here indeed, as guests enter the home, Mountain Laurel railings draw their eyes along the stairway and up to the open balcony.

While Mountain Laurel branches have a natural red hue, you can also stain them in a variety of shades to complement your home’s interior. In this Georgia home, the owners choose a dark stain to bring out the artful form of the branches against a lighter colored backdrop.
Notice also how the dark knots in the paneling balance with the dark sticks in the handrail. Although it’s a small detail, it certainly makes a big impact.

The use of color isn’t the only way to create visual interest in an interior. Contrasting shapes and textures also play a key role.

Let’s take a look at shapes first. Here, we have a great example of geometric lines enhanced with contours inspired by nature. The branch balusters form a series of sinuous shapes all framed within linear 2 by 4’s.

And secondly, notice the use of smooth texture complemented by a rough surface. The lumber used in the cap of the handrail is sanded and stained to a nice, smooth finish. Conversely, rough bark covers the Laurel branches displaying all of its natural imperfections.

In the picture above, you can clearly see the impact that the dark twigs have on the room. Now, just imagine the visual difference if boring vertical balusters were used instead.

All in all, the interesting use of contrast adds a burst of character to this country home’s spacious great room. If you’re looking for ways to spice things up in your home’s interior with contrasting color, shapes and textures, consider using flowing dark lines on natural wood.

The results on this project speak for themselves! The homeowner went with an ipe decking but wanted a contrast for the railing lumber which is rough sawn red cedar 2x4s. The railings are finished on site with rough sawn cedar 1x4s and the top plate is a 1×6 ipe decking board. The sticks on this railing are stained with Cabots Exterior Deck Stain in the Natural color. This helps preserve and enhance the natural red color of the mountain laurel sticks. It also darkens them and adds some shine.

common question about Mountain Laurel Handrails is, “What does the mountain laurel look like when it weathers?” Well, it looks a lot like a piece of cedar that turns silver with exposure to the sun. But, since pictures are worth a thousand words, here are some pictures of mountain laurel that has weathered to a silver color.

Some of you might remember a recent wood deck railings project I posted that was installed at the Summer House in Highlands, NC. I passed by there recently and noticed that the painters had been through and work was about complete on their new Idea House Showroom. The sticks and branches on these custom railings have been painted to match the color scheme. I love this picture with the timber frame porch railings in front with the green of the forest beyond.

The left picture shows a wood railing section before it was delivered. Each section was carefully painted before being delivered. It’s quite time consuming and requires a delicate hand to avoid errors. But painting the sticks is a great way to get the look that perfectly matches your colored schemes. Sticks can also be stained and this is another good way to add another level of customization to your Mountain Laurel Handrail project.

I seriously just noticed that these railings were repainted after we installed them. In the picture directly above you can see that the cedar 2x4s have been painted a light gray but in the pictures after all work on the project had been complete, the lumber is a much brighter white to match the windows and doors. I think this looks much nicer than the original color which would have matched the color of the posts. The white lumber gives the sticks plenty of contrast to set them off!

The designer on this project has a strong eye for detail and color. She brought together many local crafters to work on this project. She also keeps many of these items available in her store and is ready to help with design and decor suggestions and ideas. On the right is another picture when there was snow on the ground. White snow and the evergreen forest make a great backdrop.

New pictures have just arrived of a stairwell railing. For this project, the lumber is stained dark walnut and the branches have been painted off-white for an absolutely stunning effect. I really like how this turned out. What do you think?

Straight and simple rails stained in mocha make a stunning contrast to the silvery white branches that form balusters. Together, these elements create an abstract piece of art. Then, to bring on the holiday cheer, the homeowner decorates the balcony railing with bright, colorful lights wrapped in garland.
