We love it and get lots of compliments!

This homeowner opted to go with pine lumber on the handrail to match the pine shiplap on the interior walls. The newel post at the bottom of the stairs is set to the outside of the tread. This makes the bottom rail of this stair handrail set outside the stair stringer. This is the preferred installation method since it hides the unsightly triangle gap created if the handrail is set in line with the stair stringer and has to sit on the leading edge of the nosing of the tread instead. The homeowner wanted a stair banister to match the handrails for this stairs and since the handrails are of branches, of course that the banister should be as well. The carpenters on this project did a skillful job of joining the mountain laurel sticks that were provided to them. I especially love the step up about halfway up the stairs. The on site carpenters are definitely proficient woodworkers to recognize the innate utility of each piece of wood. A custom piece from Mountain Laurel Handrails will add unique style to your home. This incredible branch banister is the unique architectural element that defines this stair. At the top of the stairs, you’re greeted by a Mountain Laurel Handrail in the sunburst pattern with a Mountain Laurel Newel Post to finish the installation.

Though the long railing was quite a challenge for the carpenters, we are quite happy with them. Thank you.

Hi James,

Attached are 3 pictures. I really don’t feel they do your beautiful handiwork justice because the railing is going down a basement stair and the lighting is not too good. If you ever wanted to come over and photograph for yourself that would be wonderful. We’ve used the wall over the railing as a kind of Folk Art Gallery and everyone always comments on the railing. Let me know what you think. I loved looking at the new website. The home in Vermont is just gorgeous.

The end piece which “swoops” is my favorite feature. We love it.

And Now For Something Completely Different

Like they say on Monty Python…

If you missed the first post of the finished, but not yet installed, custom designed and built wavy stair banister, then you’re in for a real treat today since I have the pictures of the installed piece. It came out AWESOME! There’s no doubt that this is a one-of-a-kind, work-of-art that was a real collaboration between the homeowner’s vision and the master woodworkers in our workshop.

On the left is the view from the bottom of the staircase looking up towards the landing. This is the longest of two runs of the banister. This piece was about 11′ long. The other piece was much shorter for only two steps at the top of the landing. Careful measurements and communication allowed our workshop to draw a model from which a cardboard template was cut out. The template was stepped off over the length of the blank piece. Once the lines were drawn on the lumber, the power tools came out and sawdust and wood chips started flying! A circular saw and belt sander were used for rough cutting of the blank, which was then finished to the desired 2″ diameter. The homeowner is going to stain and finish it once her color scheme is final.

Here’s what the homeowner had to say about her project:

The banister is finally up! YEY!!! It looks great. See the pictures. I think in reality it looks even nicer than on the pictures …. I have to finish my stairs first and then I will finish the banister. I think I may tint it to golden oak color and put teak oil. Thanks for all your help!

All stained….very beautiful…….many compliments. I think it fits in with the Green Mountain surroundings perfectly. My plans are to order railings for the loft and staircase next year when I finish the inside of the barn. BTW, feel free to use the picture if you’d like. I love my deck and have had nothing but compliments about how beautiful it is and how naturally it fits in the green mountains of Vermont. Thanks James!

Vermont’s Green Mountains covered with forests create one of the best backdrops for these Mountain Laurel Handrails. This picture was taken in early spring, showing how beautifully branch balusters play off the barren trees in the landscape. Limbs from the Laurel tree also make a good fit in the four season state because they’re durable and weather well even against harsh elements.

The Vermont deck railing spans the width of the house softening the contemporary-style exterior with nature’s touch. Notice the interesting contrast between the vertical balusters on the cozy third floor balcony and the sinuous branch balusters on the second level. This demonstrates how nicely branch railings mix and match with other railing styles.

Above and below are close-up views of the customized handrail. It features an eye-catching double top railing. This provides a distinctive look, in contrast to the typical single handrail. It almost appears as if the arrangement of branches in each section is being framed to stand out like a piece of art.

You bought a beautiful new home. Your home has a beautiful deck overlooking the forest, with stairs that lead down into the spacious backyard. You filled the house with all of your favorite things. You’re really excited! Why do you feel like your house is missing something?

Your house and everything in it is an extension of who you are. This is why most people keep their homes clean and free of clutter. This is why they take months to pick out the perfect couch and the perfect lamp with a color of lampshade that offers a nice contrast to the color of the accent wall. And we have to make sure the furniture is arranged Feng Shui to offer the most peaceful and lease chaotic atmosphere in the house.

What kind of railings are on the deck? Is the deck or the railings made out of Vermont timber? Were they hand carved by a Master Carpenter? They should be. James Pader of Mountain Laurel Handrails has been hand-crafting wooden railings for decks, balconies, and stairs for the last ten years.

One man has made it his mission to bring artistic expression in homes to a new level with his Vermont timber frame designs. Instead of just a plain set of wood railings for your stairs, why not have James hand carve designs into the sturdy and sweet smelling wood to give your home an extra feeling of wow. Your family and friends will be amazed by the simple beauty of your balcony.

James offers photos of completed work along with suggestions for simple renovations on his website. An outdoor deck isn’t just a few board stuck together to give you the added 2 feet of observation height; it’s a place for you, your family and your friends can all enjoy the brilliance of the outdoors with an added sense of comfort and solitude. We know how to build a sturdy, reliable outdoor deck that will last for years. No deck, however, would be complete without an ornate railing to fit the local landscape.

Your guests will be amazed at just how intricate the designs for your brand-new Vermont timber railing look when matched up against the beautiful wilderness of the surrounding area. The Vermont timber design incorporates the aesthetics of wild tree branches strewn together without any constraint to a specific pattern to create a look that is natural and rugged. The branches were shaved of their bark and placed close together either vertically or at an angle, creating a design that is every bit as practical for the purpose it serves as it is beautiful to look at. For the perfect combination of durability and rugged aesthetics, go for the Vermont timber frame deck railing for your outdoor deck.

Clean Lines and Clean Designs with a Fresh Interpretation

While opting for clean lines and clean designs for their house, homeowners add a splash of artistic flair by integrating handrails with interlacing shrub branches. As you’ll see in the pictures below, Laurel railings are an amazing complement to modern and contemporary interior design styles.

Vermont balcony railing

When it comes to shape and line, a modern home’s interior typically features strong, straight lines. This design principle is quite evident here with the large, linear beams framing the ceiling. The indoor space also displays a strong geometric shape. But then, an unexpected element–curving and weaving balusters–stand out beautifully, while also fitting in perfectly.

Mountain Laurel handrails look particularly beautiful as a focal point with a neutral color palette and modern material choices.

Clean lines and clean designs

Modern style homes favor neutral color schemes, such as the beige and white tones shown here. The handrail’s top, bottom and newels also feature a natural stain to match the walls.

However, notice how the deep, reddish brown branches really stand out to create the room’s focal point. Their natural color also brings a sense of warmth to a spacious, open floor plan.

As you can see in the picture, the second story balcony surrounds an open concept living room. This is the perfect place to display an art form — hand-crafted branch balustrades.

Another design point to note in the picture below is how the sinuous branches from the Laurel tree break up the linear form created by the other wooden elements in the interior, such as the tongue and groove ceiling. Rustic Stair Railing

Rustic Staircase Railing
Rustic Staircase Railing

We follow an important philosophy in our design work, and that is to compliment, not compete. Our custom-made stair railings give a homeowner a new look to their already beautiful home, and a fixture that looks like it belongs. Our rustic staircase railing designs are gorgeous, yet cozy. There is a lot to our work that you may not notice at first glance, but we know the devil is in the details, and those details are what make the difference in a staircase railing project that comes out beautifully.

When it comes to rustic stair railing, our job does not just start and end at installation. Before we even take out our measuring tapes, we are using our creative expertise to design a project that fits your exact home. Our job is to make home still feel like home, and we take plenty of time to make sure the end result gets a “wow!”

Designing stair railing is actually many jobs in one. It takes an eye for design, as we always want to add beauty to the home, not just an awkwardly installed fixture. It takes an understanding of safe construction, as staircase railings are intended to add support and aid someone walking up and down the stairs. And lastly, we always have to put ourselves in the shoes of someone who lives in the home, and interacts with that environment every day. We strive to make home feel even more like home. Making our clients feel comfortable in their homes is a job we take very seriously.

Our work goes all around the country. Most recently the crew took a drive to install a rustic stair railing near Mocksville, North Carolina, a beautiful part of the country that boasts the tagline, “time well spent”—our goal was to create a home where this rang true. The home was located in a small town with a great deal of natural beauty in the area, and this home fit perfectly within the geography and landscape.

However, this beautiful log home was in desperate need of a handrail for safety and ease of access to the second-floor loft. Safety, of course, is what we consider first in our design, so we made sure whatever structure we placed alongside the stairs was strong and sound. We only use materials that we know can withstand a great amount of weight over time, and work closely with contractors to ensure impeccable installation.

We also wanted to make sure the railing design was balanced enough not to be overwhelming. Our designs can be very grand and regal, and can add a lot of beauty in a home, but size, placement, and coloring have to be carefully considered so that staircase railing does not take away from the rest of the home.

Before diving into the project, we took some time to get to familiarized with layout and design of the house, and come up with a something that looked like it belonged, not just haphazardly added. Every piece is custom made for our clients’ homes, not pre-made in a factory. Our clients know that, and that is exactly what has us driving us all the way to North Carolina for staircase railing installation!

Rustic Stair Railing Designs
Rustic Stair Railing Designs

We took a tour of the home, designed the railing, and then got right to work with the installation process. We took our time to ensure safety and sound structure, and also pored over the entire thing to make sure nothing was amiss.

The staircase we installed ascends from the left to right of the great room, creating a visual division. The timber frame trusses are finished with pine tongue and groove ceiling boards that give the home a radiant wood glow. An ornate antler chandelier hangs from the ceiling and only adds to the woodsy motif. The homeowners have cleverly utilized the space under the stairs to display part of their library, and the stain on the stairs matches exactly with the shelves on the library.. The railing extends beyond the stairs and also serves as a protective barrier on the balcony part of the upper loft, allowing continuity of the overall design. The railing design has a webbed quality to it, so it is fairly see-through—this keeps from breaking up the room too much, and allows it to still feel large and comfortable.

After our design, construction and installation came time for the big reveal, the part we look forward to the most. The most important feedback are the reactions that come right after our clients have seen the piece for the first time. Once we were done with this stair railing, we managed to get exactly the kind of reaction we love: all of the extended family, from paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother to the kindergarten-age granddaughter, were thrilled with the new look of the stairs. That is the most we could hope for: a family excited to live in the space that we helped create. The best compliment came from the lady of the house who told us,

“It looks even better than I imagined… And I have a pretty good imagination!”

– Kristin

Kristin is spot on—imagination plays a pretty major role in what we do, and we like to think of ourselves as experts in imagination. When it comes to installing rustic staircase railing, from design to installation, it takes the right combination of technical expertise and a creative eye to install something that looks and feels like home. Without taking that time, the piece may look out of place or it may drown out the rest of the home’s beauty, which is certainly not its purpose. It takes an experienced eye, and a committed designer to develop a rustic staircase railing design that fits the textures, layout and size of the home—this is never a one-size-fits-all kind of project.

We knew at first glance what kind of shapes would fit in this home. A rustic wood stair railing, with a more natural finish and natural curves would be a far better fit than a more modern design. We knew that a metal railing would look out of place.

We were also inspired by the homeowner’s existing style, and made use of the shapes and textures already found in the home. The vaulted ceiling, tongue and groove wood paneling, big timber rafters and antler chandelier hanging from the collar tie were perfectly paired with this particular decorative handrail. Since there are already plenty of strong straight lines, the sinuous shapes of woven branches tie all the different wood elements together. The result is balance and beauty, without being overwhelming. The elegance of the curved branches in the handrail pair almost exactly with the antler chandeliers.

The crew has developed a keen eye for detail. Working with a material palette that is mostly wood, it is a challenge to pick suitable colors and lumber. Since there is so much wood already, it made more sense to strike a bit of a contrast, as opposed to trying to find an exact color match. Color can really change the dynamic and feel of a room, and many people may not realize the role a big, powerful rustic stair railing like this can play in creating an atmosphere. So striking a contrast is what was done here. You will notice a lighter color stain on the same pine lumber, which lightens up the room. The mountain laurel branches are a deeper, reddish brown color, and work their magic in adding depth. The result is a room that is cozy, comfortable, and easy on the eye, while still boasting a stunning, rustic design.

Rustic Stair Railing Ideas
Rustic Stair Railing Ideas

Unique Rustic Staircase Railing

Every home is unique. Even two homes built with the same exact layout can have completely different elements in them that would warrant a different design. The walls, furniture, decor, stains all tell their own story in each home. We always look for a particular center of gravity in the layout of the home, and create designs to align with that, and flow with the lines, shapes and patterns of the home. We also gain inspiration from our clients’ own style, working with them instead of stubbornly imposing our own vision on their home.

Another recent project features a unique rustic stair railing. In all homes, stairs are more than just a solely component connect two floors together. Many people underestimate how much impact a staircase can have on the atmosphere of a home. Strong design skills also make stairs an element of design to tie into the homes structure and decor and create a room that feels comfortable and well-designed.

In this particular home, the stairs ascend from the living room to the second floor and are an important visual element of the rustic home decor. The wall against which the stairs rest are made with a stone pattern with alternating shades of grey. The railing design must appropriately compliment the rest of the home, and its unique, nature inspired features.

This is the kind of layout that needs a truly customized approach. With this installation, the staircase is supported by an 8-inch to 10-inch diameter hickory log and finished at the bottom with a hickory newel post, both of which are in their natural state with the bark on. This is the kind of center of gravity that we tend to build around. The natural, unfinished bark gave us some ideas to work with when it came to designing the staircase. This room was smaller than the one we worked with above, so that played a role in the size of the staircase railing we ultimately designed.

We absolutely love homes with features like these—natural fixtures make homes unique, and add something that breaks up the room creatively and comfortably. Because we are experienced in designing rustic staircase railings, we always welcome the challenge of designing with and alongside features like these.

Rustic Stair Railing
Rustic Stair Railing

A big part of home design is texture, and this is a great example case. Texture is found on the walls, the floor, the ceilings, and of course, the stairs. When we are developing a rustic staircase railing design, we are taking into consideration what kind of textures are in the home, and what we are going to be adding. The important thing is to compliment, instead of compete. Since this house is nature inspired, with a beautiful newel post in the center of the room, we definitely wanted to keep the nature-inspired theme going on. The tree branch stair railing that we installed is built with Mountain Laurel Handrails. With the stone wall in the background, this rustic stair and handrail give the feeling of being in the woods near a rock face.

While the first home boasted a more finished, carved and designed look, this one feels more raw and natural. The stains we picked to color our project took into account the dark stone walls and the amount of light found in this room. The shade of brown in the railing closely matches the staircase itself. Because there is less wood in this particular room, we could get away with more color matching and did not have to worry as much about striking the right contrast.

One of the biggest challenges of rustic living is finding alternatives to modern building designs that capture the beauty of nature, and rustic handrails are ideally suited for this task. Putting average railings on your decks, stairs and landings detract from the organic look of your home or log cabin. Even more, contemporary structures can use a touch of nature to tie them into the landscape. Rustic deck railings can add just the right amount of nature to any structure but how do you find the one that has both form and function? Some homes in certain areas, like the mountains or the country, are perfect for a rustic theme. You know the type: wood and stone and earth colors — lots of log structures and timber frame porches. Some people like the rusty metal roof look, and it’s easy to recreate and still have a watertight home! The best way to quickly and easily capture the look of a mountain lodge is with a branch railing from Mountain Laurel Handrails! This is the perfect conversation started for any backyard barbecue.

Handrails, railings or guardrails all have two main parts; the top piece your hand touches, usually spanning from post to post, and the balustrade or screen that prevents children and pets from going under the railing. Log style railings typically have a balustrade of vertical sticks or balusters that form the lower barrier. Other cabin railings may use wood, metal or glass screens to break up the monotony of vertical and horizontal lines associated with log home railings. Choosing natural materials like Mountain Laurel Handrails can make a boring balustrade into a work of natural art. When it comes to rustic handrails, the frame should be naturally strong and complement the structure.

Hi James,
We are finally living in our beautiful home – everybody comments on the railings. In fact, our inspector was clearly impressed with their beauty and sturdiness! Thanks again. We’ll probably be in touch for more handrails

Rustic Handrails and Building Code and Regulations

As mentioned, natural railings can be an opportunity to deviate from the repetitive lines created by the structure. Those with screens made from materials like laurel are both strong and beautiful. Strength isn’t the only safety factor confronting the design though. Building codes require that the gaps in the screen or balustrade be small enough your pets and children don’t fall through. These guidelines must be met whether on the interior balcony or exterior deck of the home. Log style railings bunch the balusters together to keep the gaps small. To avoid this, rustic porch railings sometimes have screens constructed from limbs layered to represent the forest canopy. While this is less repetitive, the limbs of most trees are too weak to form a secure barrier. Handrail screens made from mountain laurel maintain the canopy illusion while forming a strong, safe barrier. When choosing any product for your home, there are always many options. A common sight on log homes is the turned log baluster. This is commonly a pine, or sometimes a white cedar, turned round about 3 inches to 4″ diameter. They are often connected to round top and bottom horizontal rails with a mortise and tenon joint. (This is an advanced woodworking technique where two pieces of wood are joined by fitting the end of one into a hole on the other.) The top and bottom rails are also often round logs but are usually a larger diameter.

Mountain Laurel Handrails provides the best rustic rails in easy to install sections, delivered nationwide. The sections pictured here are built offsite and delivered. The contractor on the remodel project installed it and applied the finish. The top rustic banister rail is a stick of mountain laurel as are all the branches. The lower 1×4 boards are yellow pine to match the existing stair stringer, posts, and trim.

Best Rustic Railing
Best Rustic Railing

At the top of the stairs, a slightly different design is used. The top and bottom boards are cedar 2x4s laid on the flat. These boards are mortised into round cedar posts. These posts are almost identical to the tree since they are not milled or cut with a saw. The carpenter here removed the bark before installing and then applies a finish after the work is complete. This style with the 2x4s flat is great for interior railing but is not recommended as a deck railing. The flat boards allow water to collect and this is avoided by using the typical design shown in the product guide (PDF) for all exterior railing.

Styles of Rustic Railing

Whatever the style you have in mind, we can create it together, and you’re sure to end up with the best looking rustic railing you’ve seen. These are perfect for log homes and cabins, timber frame homes, and homes with lots of wood accents or a mountain lodge style.

Mountain Laurel Handrails are the rustic wood handrails of choice for homeowners looking for a distinctive outdoor style. These railings are made with the top and bottom horizontal rails usually from cedar 2×4 lumber, but the balusters are sticks instead of milled wood. The sticks fastened together in random patterns so that no two are quite alike. Since each stick grows into a different shape, the handrail sections look is determined by the wood used in it. Maybe you would like to learn to build your own?

Rustic wood railing enhances the natural beauty of any scenic setting. Just take a look at these pictures on a deck overlooking the lake! This is a unique railing design where the woven branch sections appear to be picture framed in between each individual post. The empty space on either side is much like the importance of a musical pause; the empty space often is what defines the boundaries of the work. And in this case, the white space lets in more of the natural scenery and accents the fruits of human artisans!

Working closely with the on-site crew enables the Wood Railing team to craft a work of art that will perfectly complement existing conditions. These are framed sections similar to ones we did previously although the railing design is somewhat different. The big timber posts define the boundaries of the frame, and each railing section brings its own organic character.

“I was just so excited today after Kenny got most of the rails up and wanted to share a few pictures with you. Our house is in the thick of our remodeling project. Thank you again for the beautiful railings! Everyone who has seen them thus far has been really impressed!”

What kind of branches for a rustic railing?

Mountain laurel and rhododendron are members of the Heath family, related to roses and azaleas, that thrive in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina. These trees are often found growing together in dense thickets. In the springtime, rhododendrons bloom with clusters of pink, white and sometimes purple blossoms. Mountain laurel and rhododendron often fall victim to the process of clearing and preparing a home site. These trees are generally burned as waste. Reuse of these branches prevents them from being wasted in a bonfire and instead brings their organic beauty into your home. The natural characteristics of these twisted limbs are a perfect complement to a rustic residence. Skilled craftsmen can assemble these branches through complex joinery into dazzling arrangements of nature’s own beauty.

mountain laurel flowers bloom in spring
Mountain Laurel Flowers Bloom in Spring

The branches of mountain laurel and rhododendron trees are well-suited for use as wood spindles or decorative screen. When used in a handrail, smaller diameter branches of less than 1.5 inches are preferred. The tops and bottoms of the branches are easily ‘sandwiched’ between two pieces of lumber for easy installation. Mountain Laurel Handrails will often look as if they have grown in place.

Pre-assembled handrail sections are manufactured to length for delivery to your location. Thicker branches can serve as posts to support the assembly to increase its beauty and complexity. There are also plenty of applications inside the house. A grand, open staircase in a mountain lodge is stunning with a unique Mountain Laurel Handrail. These handrails also look great on balconies and lofts in log cabin homes. Larger branches can be used in their unaltered state as one-of-a-kind interior accents and decorations. All kinds of furniture, from chairs and tables to bedframes and bureaus, can be crafted out of this versatile wood.

Mountain laurel or rhododendron branches bring natural rustic beauty into all facets of your home! Those that are larger in diameter than regularly used in handrails are available for use in other creative projects. Skilled craftsmen assemble this versatile wood into many items including exterior structures, pergolas, gazebos, bridge guardrails and plenty more.

An outdoor gazebo could have natural trunks for the walls and roof framing, smaller branches for privacy screens and even furniture in the same style all to impart the look and feel of the forest to your home.

What is Rhododendron Railing?

Rhododendron is a species of bushy tree that grows in the Appalachian Mountains. This tree grows in a manner similar to, and is also closely related to the mountain laurel. Both are in the family Ericaceae which is a type of tree that prefers more acidic soil. These types of soils are standard on the decaying mountainsides of the Appalachians where a thin layer of extremely rich leaf litter topsoil covers an acidic, clay dirt.

Since both of these trees are closely related and grow in similar conditions, they share a general appearance. The branches of both grow into similar sinuous shape and both have glossy, dark green evergreen leaves. In the wild, the flowers are the most striking difference in the spring. Mountain laurel blooms in creamy white and pink bushes while the rhodos are often pink and purple. Rhododendron has been cultivated as a landscaping plant and is now available in many different colors.

Rhododendron railings look almost identical to railings made with mountain laurel. The main difference is the bark of the mountain laurel has lines along the length while the rhododendron branches have a smoother bark with some splotches.

Seven Simple Ways to Give Your Home an Elegant Rustic Feel

  • Color Scheme
  • Eye to the Room
  • Dining Room
  • Bedrooms
  • Kitchen
  • Bathrooms
  • Simple Decor Tips

1) Color Scheme

– The colors of the inside of the home accentuate or detract from the colors of the furniture and other accessories, ie, tables, lamps, artwork, etc. that you already have. To provide a color contrast more pleasing to the eye, look to the furniture. If your furniture is dark brown or black, it is best to go with a cream or light beige colored non-gloss satin finish paint for your walls. If your furniture is light brown or White, as in White Washed Pine, it is best to go with a slightly darker color on the walls with perhaps a darker accent wall on the side of the room that is perpendicular to the window, maybe a Hunter Green or Brick Red. Look to the rugs as well, the color you choose for an accent wall should be present at least in a small part in the floor rug. Going with a monochromatic color scheme or a Dichromatic color scheme throughout the house is fine as long as you bring color into the house with accessories.

Rustic Stair Railing for Deck

2) “Eye” to the room

– Each room has its own Piece de Resistance, a piece of furniture or artwork that you have that brings the “Eye” to that piece first when you walk into the room. Each other piece in the room should be complimentary, not competitive with that piece. The furniture, rugs, lamps, etc. should all complement each other so that the room has a balanced feel to it.

3) Dining Room

– Your family will spend a lot of time in here. To make your dining room a showplace, think to the table. What color is the wood? You will want a white or cream dining table cloth of linen or cotton, well-pressed. Napkins of linen in seasonal colors with simple carved wood napkin rings go well with silver or gold plate wear, as well as bold colored stoneware plates in Blue, Green, or Red. Navy Blue, Hunter, Olive or Khaki Green, or Brick or Bold Red. The key is simplicity and elegance.

4) Bedrooms

– Back in the day, people living in the mountains made their own furniture, clothing, and blankets. The blankets were predominantly either furs or quilts. Nowadays, you don’t have to build your own rustic furniture, that is what you have us for, but keeping a theme in place throughout the house does include the kind of furnishings that a real mountain home would have. Not everyone has four-poster beds anymore, although they are very sturdy as well as beautiful and stand the test of time. We recommend simplicity in furnishings in every room. A simple rustic bedroom has a bed, covered with pure white sheets and pillowcases, a white top sheet, a blanket, and then overlaid by a quilt or an eiderdown comforter in Bold colors, either Red, Blue or Green. If the floor covering is carpet, keep in mind the color of the carpet when choosing the color of the comforter. If the walls of the room are darker, or wallpapered, the bed would look classic and antique covered with a simple quilt.

Rustic Railing for the Rustic Home

5) Kitchen

– Your kitchen is an extension of your personality, and tells guests a lot about who you are as a person. Hanging a magnet strip inside the area above the island and then three to five pots and pans from the magnet strip will provide a convenient way for you to get your hands on pots and pans in a hurry as well as an “eye-pleasing” way for you to showcase your beautiful kitchen. Dark cutting boards for light colored kitchens and the opposite for dark colored kitchens. Pot holders and dish clothes that go with the dishes in bold colors that accentuate the other colors in the room rather than competing or clashing colors.

6) Bathrooms

– Here is where you can really make your mark and show guests how creative you can be. Bathroom accessories should include a soap dish, hand towels, a box of tissue, and large 6′ bath towels. The hand soap is something you can make yourself. Take a muffin tin, grease it with olive oil and then leave to the side. Take 3-4 cubes of shea butter or goats milk soap ( you can buy them in cakes for $10@ from Michaels Arts and Crafts), cut the cubes from the cake of soap and drip 3-4 drops of essential oil into a coffee mug with a teaspoon of uncooked well sifted oatmeal. Microwave for 65 seconds and then stir with a spoon. Pour into your mold. Repeat steps until your entire muffin tin are filled with soap. Put into refrigerator to harden for one hour. After one hour, pull the muffin tin out of the refrigerator and then put a medium towel on the counter. Put the muffin tin facedown on the towel and lightly tap the back of the tin with a wooden spoon to loosen the soap cakes from inside. Twist the muffin tin sheet to free the soap cakes from the sheet. Now you wrap each soap cake in tissue paper and secure with scotch tape at the back and place two to three cakes of soap in a small basket in each bathroom for family and guests to wash their hands with your homemade oatmeal soap.

7) Simple Decor Tips

– For a rustic cabin feel, keep a stoneware bowl of dried flowers on the coffee table along with some coffee table books. Some good books to keep handy are books with photos of nearby attractions and Natural phenomena, i.e., waterfalls, National Parks, Log Cabin homes, and Botanical Gardens. For a small out of pocket investment and a few hours of effort, you can turn your home into a Rustic Masterpiece, simple and elegant. Hopefully, this post has helped you think differently about log home railings and other rustic wood railings you have seen in the past. The right rustic handrails depend on your particular architecture, but not all log railings will be both durable and safe. Good rustic handrails start with naturally durable materials like mountain laurel or cedar.

Interior Balcony Railing

A home in Wisconsin spotlights stunning style for a cabin loft with its interior balcony railing. This large loft adds function to the open concept design.  As a multipurpose area, it can be used for extra sleeping quarters, a playroom and much more. But just as importantly, a loft’s design can make a huge visual impact as you will see in the pictures below.

Here, robust glass windows provide an abundance of natural light to brighten the loft. At the same time, the sun’s rays highlight the room’s details such as hefty, wooden beams and Laurel branch railings. The view captures a beautiful blend of geometric and organic shapes.

Nature-Inspired Style for a Cabin Loft

The cabin loft overlooks a spacious two story great room. Notice how the cathedral ceiling with its steep pitch brings height and an airy ambiance to the space. In addition, natural wood planks line the ceiling walls to accent the cabin’s rustic character charmingly. When you enter a home, the balcony or stair railing is often the first view of the interior space. So it goes without saying that it has to be uniquely designed to make a great first impression.

Coming up the stairs
Coming up the stairs

Handrails function as a safely component along the stairway and loft. But, as you can see from this picture, choosing the right railing style adds an aesthetic feature to this Wisconsin home’s interior design. This shows the importance considering the finer custom details when making design choices.

Balcony Railng Interior

This newly constructed railing features branch balusters covered in bark along with their natural weave. It clearly captures the essence of style for a cabin loft. You’ll also notice that the handrails use natural wood balusters which are an excellent addition especially if you also want the cabin balcony to have a funky and rustic inviting feel. Not to mention the interior balcony railings also give the cabin a countryside antique touch that’s superbly striking.

Here, the handrail is intersected by a floor to ceiling newel post that mirrors surrounding natural wood trusses. Like all other handrails, the railing for interior balcony is also strong and secure to provide stability and safety as you go up the cabin loft. However, more than just providing safety, the designers also wanted it to function as a support. So for instance, if you’re feeling a bit weak but still want to go up the cabin loft and catch a breath or have some quiet time, you can still access it easily. Plus there are obviously going to be all sorts of people using the balcony railing including both young children and more elderly folks so it was necessary to incorporate a sense of security and support.

Above is a close-up view of the rough-hewn beauty of bark covered twigs, coarse planks and knotty timbers.  All of these materials inspired by nature combine to give this get-away its relaxing warmth and unpretentious charm. The simplicity of the designs also makes the railings sync perfectly with the cabin loft giving the balcony a low profile charming look. Notice that the natural wood elements add warmth to the stairway and ease the transition from downstairs to the cabin loft which is something that as a designer I feel adds a sparkle to the interior design element. As a design note, the meandering branch balusters on the interior wood balcony railing also seem to contrast beautifully with the cathedral ceiling hence adding a beautiful visual twist to the loft.

What are different styles of interior balcony railing?

Each stair and balcony railing is different just like each section of Mountain Laurel Handrails is different. This provides an opportunity to make your home special. Like an architect told me recently,”I spend lots of time detailing railings;
they help elevate mere housing into Architecture.”

What are the Different Types of Interior Balcony Railings?

I think this is a particularly important question if you’re unsure about what kind of interior balcony railing to get. Interior balcony railings come in one of three categories. There’s the interior wood balcony railing which is what we focus more on for many reasons. For instance, there are plenty of artistic possibilities in each twisted branch which makes it easy to mold the branches into an infinite number of designs. At the same time, wood has a way of dramatically improving the appearance of your home to give it a stunning artistic look. Apart from the aesthetic and functional aspect of it, wood is also quite sturdy which makes it the perfect source of support and safety for people of all ages.

The next type of railing is the interior glass balcony railing. This interior balcony railing design as the name suggests is designed using glass either in part or in whole. It is more suitable for people who are looking for a sleek, contemporary look that at the same time offers a touch of elegance and enough room for customization.

In addition to the wood railing and the glass railing, there’s also the wrought iron interior balcony railing. Wrought iron railings are a common and easy choice in interior design for a number of reasons. The material is easy to maintain, durable and classic looking. Plus like with wood, there are plenty of design possibilities too.

All in all, the addition of natural woods and branches in this style for a cabin loft certainly feels like an extension of the great outdoors. If you favor an interior design style that mirrors the beauty of nature, contact us at Mountain Laurel Handrails to discuss your vision and ideas.

Balcony Railing

An Important Architectural Element

Many modern homes incorporate some type of great room and loft to create an open feel to the living space. This means that there is often a balcony railing that is prominent in the great room or living area. Take your time selecting the railing idea that is right for you.

Balcony Handrail
Balcony Handrail

The balcony handrail is an architectural element of a home’s interior design that is often overlooked by designer, builder and homeowner. The staircase leading up is often one of the very first pieces of the home that a new visitor will see. It is important to make a strong statement with these architectural elements that will dazzle viewers.

What Type of Balcony Railings to Use

Mountain Laurel Handrails use natural wood balusters to create wondrous designs from branches that have grown into a variety of shapes. This design incorporates a balcony handrail which connects with the stair railing and leads into the cathedral ceiling.

Balcony Railing Design Choices

Your architectural selections makes a strong statement about design choices and interior stair railing kits from us are a great choice! In many homes, the staircase is the most visible architectural element inside the home. As it rises from floor to floor, the viewer’s eye is drawn upward towards the heavens. Often the stairs will be accompanied by a stone or rock fireplace in a great room. This large living space is the central gathering point of a home.

Many homes feature a grand staircase as the focal point of a great room. And oftentimes these stairs are finished with precise woodworking. But too often, the stair hand rails get overlooked and the balusters end up as boring pickets or turned spindles going up and down from tread to banister. A thoughtful staircase design acknowledges that an intricate and beautiful balustrade is the most important factor in the look of a stairway.

Stair Railing
stairs railing
Stairs Railing

The stairs lead up to a balcony where the handrail of the stairs continues. Many formal designs feature vertical balusters that are evenly spaced. Sometimes these wood balusters will be turned with designs seemingly carved into them.

These pictures show of how the staircase and balcony is the centerpiece of the great room. The front door to this home is located at the foot of the stair, so as visitors enter, they are greeted with the sight of these interesting features. The staircase design draws the eye upward toward the balcony handrail and then further into the room where the viewer is greeted by cathedral ceilings and tongue-in-groove pine boards. The use of similar colors on the lower and upper levels also adds to the visual excitement and ties the room together.

Wooden Balcony Railings for Wooden Homes

The first thing you see as you enter this home is the stair railing and it leads to the balcony handrail which is also made in the same style. The tongue and groove lumber on the cathedral ceiling required expert woodworking precision to ensure a close fit. Take a close look at the pictures and you’ll see all the special modifications that the carpenters made to produce quality finished work.

Balcony Handrail Designs and Code Regulations

Balcony handrail design, just like most parts of a home or new construction, are governed by different code regulations. These code requirements are set in most places by the building code produced by the International Code Council. These requirements are then adopted and modified by local jurisdictions.

The handrail height code in most places is between 36″ and 42″. The balcony handrail system provided by Mountain Laurel Handrails comes in sections that are typically 31″ tall. With a 3.5″ space from the finish floor and a 1.5″ thick board on the top, the finish height is 36″. If you want something taller than this, just let us know.

Yellow Pine for Log Home

The homeowner liked the look of yellow pine lumber and they already had a lot of wood in the home which made this rustic stair railing the crowning jewel in this home. Many homes incorporate different kinds of wood and it’s important to keep everything in a home matching nicely. This can be a tricky proposition in either new construction or remodeling. Other material options include wrought iron , glass panels or balusters, regular wood balusters made of 2×2 boards.

Lumber Options for Balcony Handrail and Stairs Railing

Our master carpenters in the workshop can help with some of these choices. Lumber is one of the most common modifications to an order as homeowners and contractors try to match the new or existing lumber. This yellow pine option installed in a log home remodel in the North Georgia mountains shows how keeping the lumber palette limited can blend the whole project together for great final results.

There is great diversity in the different lumber species. Even cutting the same tree in different ways results in wood that looks differently. The typical lumber for Mountain Laurel Handrails is red cedar. This lumber ranges from light pink to dark brown with knots. Clear cedar which has no knots is also available for a premium price. Redwood, which is similar to cedar and is apparently common the West Coast, is quite expensive on the East Coast where it is special order.

This handrail installation made this home extra special and unique. But Mountain Laurel Handrails aren’t the only type of unique stairway railing that is a good match for a mountain home. Depending on the style that you’re looking for, you’ll have some choices to make. But choosing a bold statement for your inside handrails is sure to make a strong impression! Especially for a log home or a mountain home with lots of wood ceilings and hardwood floors like the one pictured here, natural wood is the perfect match for pine ceilings and hardwood flooring. Contact Today with your project details to get started!

Balcony Railing in a Texas Barndominium

This project was installed in a Texas “barndominium”, a large open barn-type building that has been converted for residential use. We worked with the homeowner while this home was still in the beginning construction phase. This close collaboration leads to a well-executed finale. If you have questions or want specific advice on your project, contact us and we’d be happy to help so that your results are just as pleasing as this!

Here’s what the homeowner had to say when she sent her pictures of the completed work.

Hi James,
Hope these pictures work for you. We think the balcony railing adds so much to the Texas barndominium look. We really like them and get many positive comments. Thanks for being so easy to work with through the process.

The homeowner decorated with icicle lights for the Christmas holiday. I know that this post is a little late for the holiday season but this is just such a great looking railing. The dark stained beam and handrail opens up to the natural pine tongue and groove ceiling. Those icicle lights add a festive look and the three-blade fan adds a nice touch. The balcony looks like a there’s some furniture set up and lamps for lounging and reading a book or just curling up for a short nap.

Interior Stair Railing

We are proud to say that our work has been all across the country. Our clients are looking for work that is expertly crafted and beautifully designed, and our experience speaks well to our ability to achieve both. We are glad that the kind of work we do allows us to service people from all over, and create all kinds of masterpieces. Working with a lot of different homes gives us a lot of insight and perspective into what homeowners are looking for, what kinds of outdoor landscapes we are working with, and how truly unique each home is. For this project, we took a trip to the southern heartland of America—all the way to Sweet Home Alabama.

We were asked to install a grand interior stair railing. We took a look at the home and were, as we always are, thoroughly impressed by its beauty–this one especially took our breath away. The home is located on a lake, and has all the southern charm you would expect of a lake house in Alabama. Being close to a body of water always gives homes a sense of grandeur, as the inside of the home is always built to match the magnificence of the outside.

This homeowner had really put work into the interior, and it showed. The home was newly remodeled with a completely new interior with reclaimed beams and flooring and custom woodwork throughout. The flooring featured a multi color stains with the different panels looking like they were made from a different type of wood, an elegant and eclectic look we appreciated. We were excited to see what we could contribute to an already beautiful interior, working closely to match the themes, patterns and textures already present.

Getting to Work

There were a few things we knew we had to take into consideration here. First, this is a gorgeous, large home that boasts equally beautiful outdoor scenery. We had to bring in something as grand as the home to properly match its decor and its atmosphere. This was the time to go bigger, instead of smaller, as a small, dainty interior stair railing would look silly against this backdrop. Second, there was a great deal of woodwork already—this was the theme that tied this home together, so we wanted to make sure the stair railing looked like it belonged. We took time to get a sense of the kind of woodwork present, as there were multiple kinds of color and stains. We appreciated that, since a singular color throughout the home would look a little too uniform. Finally, we had to keep in mind that all of this was newly remodeled and newly restored. The homeowner had put a lot of work and money into achieving a certain look within the home, so we had to be extra careful to match up with that vision. We took the time to carefully study the selected texture that came with the remodel. We’re building for the home, not installing the piece and leaving it up to the homeowner to make it work.

Antler Chandelier and Railing
Antler Chandelier and Railing

This is what we came up with: these Mountain Laurel Handrails were selected by the Walker Design Studio, and the color and texture were a perfect match for the interior stairs and balconies—it is almost like they were made for this home! Mountain Laurel Handrails are unique woven branch railings, custom crafted works of art for interior stairs and balconies, and that level of customization makes for a truly beautiful work of art, something that looks like it was plucked right out of a natural landscape. These kinds of railings are also great for exterior decks and porches, and since the outdoor of this home is a part of its charm, we wanted to give a sense of that within the home as well, almost like bringing that lakeside view into the home. The lighter colored stain matched excellently with the wood paneling and the interior walls, making it look like all of the home was crafted by one designer.

Rustc Railing and Antler Chandelier
Railing and Antler Chandelier

While we take the entire room in when we are coming up with designs, we also look to identify something key and central to design around. This adds to a sense of unity and structure, and makes the room for more comfortable and less chaotic. We noticed one particularly charming feature of this home, that we identified as a kind of center of gravity: beautiful antler chandeliers. The curved lines of the piece gave the newly remodeled home a bit more of a rustic look, striking a balance between modern and classic. Wanting to match that sense of balance, we added some curved branches to the stair railing design. The stain on the branches is darker, striking a bit of a contract that brings out the elegance of the curves a little more, and makes the lighter colored frame of the railing look even brighter. What we particularly like about a design like this is that keeps the room looking spacious and open; because the design is see through, and does not block the view of the rest of the room, it prevents the interior stair railing from breaking up the room, and keeping it grand and open. And the contrasting colors pair very well with the multi colored wood paneling, bringing out the different stains and texture found on the floor. The branches also serve a functional purpose, and add more structure to the piece, and less open spaces that could be dangerous for someone climbing up the stairs.

Lighted Wood Railing
Lighted Wood Railing

The wood timbers and shiplap paneling impose strong linear elements which is matched counterpoint by the organic and curved shapes of the Mountain Laurel Handrail. Since each section incorporates many different sticks and branches, each piece takes on a unique look which is sure to be an admired part of this grand entry stair. The stair railing looks both crafted and natural, which is a great metaphor for this charming lakeside home.

Creating the Right View

We also noticed some other elements of the home adding to its overall style: knotty alder doors and the reclaimed wood floors, which combine to make the entryway to this home truly grand. These interior stair railings are one of the first things you see when entering the home, so it is especially important that the view upon entrance isn’t jarring, and matches well with the rest of the home. It does put a but of pressure on us to design something just right, but we certainly work well under pressure!

When considering the size and structure of the stair railings, we used size to our advantage. The height of the railing is large without being overpowering or silly looking. The vertical posts extend beyond the railing’s structure to add even more size and grandeur. The homeowner was looking to make the home look big and inviting, and we gladly went along with that very vision!

Building for Your Home

A project like this takes a symbiotic relationship. Some designers and crafters may enter a home and stubbornly install the kind of indoor stair railing that they want, something to flex their design muscles, and would look good on its own in a portfolio. That’s not our intention. Instead, our most important consideration is the very final result, and the look of the railing within the entire home, not just a cropped photo for our website. It takes constant communication to pull off a truly customized project like this one, with the homeowners, the contractors, even the people who will be living in the home. The most important question we ask when letting a homeowner know what we are thinking of designing is “can you imagine yourself living in this home with this particular stair railing?” After all, we leave once the project is done–the person whose insight matters most is the homeowners.

We’re also in constant communication with other fellow builders and contractors that may be involved in the process. You may be remodeling the whole house while you have us working, we may need other contractors to help us with installation of the project. We like to think we play well with others! We’re always willing to seek help to make sure everything we install is safe and secure, because an interior stair railing that doesn’t keep you safe while going up the stairs may as well not be there at all. From our materials, to our installation process, we are double checking every step of the way.

The final result

While we don’t build just for the sake of an online portfolio, you can still see how our work meshed well with the rest of the home in these photos. Above is a cool view of the antler chandelier mentioned before, looking through the railings. You can see the way light travels through the branches and sorts of bounces off the different corners of the room. We love the mystique it adds to the environment without necessarily taking away much light. The room still feels big and inviting.

This photo shows you the height and size of the railings. They don’t take too much space away from this hallway area, while still adding to the majestic atmosphere of the home. And notice the coloring–the contrast of the branches and the large posts look almost perfectly paired with those multicolored wall beams.

You can see above why we love using these branches in our interior stair railings. They add structure to the railings, are essential for safety by taking away major gaps someone can fall through, but they don’t block the view of the room. You can still look up or down and get a good view of the environment through the beams.
