Big Sky Montana Railing

Big Sky Montana railing gets its inspiration from the rugged terrain and other natural surroundings of this home’s amazing locality.

Montana, nicknamed Big Sky Country is famous for its magnificent mountains, alpine forests and abundant wildlife. So instinctively, the homeowners wanted to incorporate local elements into their interior design.

Big Sky Montana Railing

Natural and rustic, the Big Sky Montana railing artfully outlines this staircase from the balcony to the landing. Rough hewn posts recreate the look of early mountain-style architecture. In similar style, organic Mountain Laurel twigs twist and turn forming a unique pattern within each railing section.

The large, black bolts used to mount the railings to the staircase add another vintage touch. Rugged metal caps top the posts. It’s amazing how these small accents make a big impact on the railing’s bucolic appearance.

Here’s what the Montana homeowner had to say about his new railings:

James,

Thanks for everything, they look great. I’m quite sure you’ll be seeing a few more orders from Big Sky, everyone is oohing and aahing over these.

Thanks again, quality product

Jesse V.

Big game hunting is part of Montana’s culture and history. In keeping with tradition, a Rocky Mountain elk chandelier shines above the staircase. Notice how this rustic light fixture complements the Big Sky Montana railing perfectly.

We also like the towering, wood paneled wall on the right that completes the look. The panels and railings boast a matching walnut stain, which pops out against celadon walls in the backdrop.

House Boat Timber Frame Handrail

We know branch railings have become very popular, but we never thought we’d see them on a houseboat. Of course, this isn’t an ordinary houseboat. And the one-of-a-kind handrails make it just that much more extraordinary!

This houseboat with a timber frame branch railing is actually a floating house. These homes on the water often serve as a seasonal or permanent residence. What makes this one so unique is its classic and timeless half-timber design–a popular European style dating back centuries.

French-style glass doors open up to the outdoor balcony for a beautiful view. As you can see in the pictures, the railings are as decorative as they are functional. Non-navigable floating homes don’t have an engine and propeller for propulsion power. To get around, a tugboat tows the houseboat with a timber frame branch railing through the calm and sunny bay.

Interior Wood Railing

Small Railing Projects with a Big Impact

Although it’s a relatively small project, adding a new or updating an interior railing makes a big impact on your home’s appearance. After all, your staircase and balcony are typically the first things visitors see when they walk into your home. Additionally, Mountain Laurel railings offer a bigger benefit by inspiring designers and homeowners to broaden their creativity with the artful beauty of branches.

Let’s take a look at a few small projects with a big impact involving stair and balcony interior wood railing.

Each features a simple and straight interior stairway with a balcony that takes advantage of the natural beauty of branch balusters. While each home displays its own unique twist on a cabin, country or beach-style interior, the use of wooden rails and branching infill fits beautifully with each design style, ranging from rustic to contemporary.

In contrast to the small railing projects shown in the first pictures, the one above displays a more finished appearance to suit a contemporary-style interior. To create this look the railing is installed using a method that hides the triangular gap typically seen when the railing is set in line with the stair stringer.

Extra Tall is Extra Awesome!

Tall Railing

These two wood railing sections are extra tall at five feet just for the railing. That puts the top of the railing at almost six feet. Just another demonstration of how versatile and inventive Mountain Laurel Handrail can be. The design of any project is crucial and, on this project, Wood Railing, the contractor and the homeowner worked closely together to ensure the best possible finished product. And as you can see, it turned out wonderfully!

tall railing screen
Tall Handrail

Like all Mountain Laurel Handrails, this was custom made to the owner’s specifications. The homeowner was looking for a special design element to add to her New Hampshire ski home and this was just the ticket! These tall sections are five feet tall and will be installed inside on a loft balcony. For extra added safety, the homeowner will install a piece of plexiglass on the face of the railings. Normally, laurel branches stick out from either side of the handrail but in this case, the branches were left flush or set in from the front of the railing so that the polycarbonate plexiglass can be installed easily.

James,

Last year we completed a custom home that had your handrails installed. They look amazing so I wanted to forward you on some pictures of the project. You are welcome to use these pictures if you would like.

The homeowners absolutely love them- they fit in perfectly with their style and are one of a kind.

As guests enter this recently completed custom home, the first thing to draw their eye is the contemporary stair railing, featuring Mountain Laurel Handrails. Balusters designed from branches of the Laurel tree gracefully interlace from the base of the staircase up to the overlooking balcony.

As you can see from this picture, it’s amazing how a simple design element, such as branches, can turn an ordinary staircase into the centerpiece of a room. (Although, it appears that the cuddly cat in the foyer is vying to be the main attraction here!)

Contemporary Stair Railing

Below is a close-up view of the gorgeous stairway and handrail. Notice the natural beauty of the branches, bark and all. Chunky newel posts are another prominent feature of the platform staircase. Slightly over-sized, they are well suited for the large open space and add balance to the wooden pillars on the left that support the balcony.

Contemporary Stair Railing
Elegant Stair Railing

The neutral color palette is also striking, while bringing all of the architectural elements together for a cohesive look. The newels and top and bottom rails are stained deep brown to match the plank flooring in variegated brown. To make the railing elements stand out, trim along the stairway is painted in contrasting white.

Overall, the architectural elements and décor, including Mountain Laurel Handrails, mounted animal trophies and a candlelight chandelier, display a striking, yet unexpected mix of rustic and elegant interior design.

I think these pictures will inspire your imagination when choosing a railing system, whether your design preferences lean rustic, country or more towards elegant stairs.

Installing Mountain Laurel Handrails is easy!

Basic carpentry tools and skills are required, however. Here you can see that the carpenters have out the most important tool: the jobsite work radio. The radio is the first thing to come out of the truck with all the power cords and electrical boxes, and the last thing to get put away in the evening. But seriously, the carpenters are using a level to make sure that the railings are level as they are installed between the posts. A circular saw is needed for cutting the ends of the sections as well as additional lumber and boards that are required to complete the project. An air compressor and nail gun make installing certain boards quick and efficient. Mountain Laurel Handrail sections need to be screwed into the posts to get a strong connection and attachment point.

Flowing Mountain Laurel branches create the fluid infill. This is another unique feature as no two branches and therefore, no two sections are alike. Rough bark covers the balusters and creates an interesting contrast to the smooth and polished rails.

Variegated wood landings connect the platform stairway as it changes direction on its long way down to the lower level. Thick stair treads are made to match other elements in the stairway, beautifully. Additionally, the open riser stairs add an element of airiness to the staircase.

The walls along the staircase are faced with irregular fieldstone creating a mosaic pattern. Multi-colored stones in neutral overtones contrast nicely with the chestnut stained rails.

This lake time balcony railing mirrors the homeowners’ message of ease and enjoyment!

The owners of this cozy lakefront home wanted to define their interior with an openness that blends with the lake and outdoor scenery. They did this perfectly with a large balcony overlooking the great room, complemented with a staircase that’s open on one side.

To harmonize these architectural elements they tapped into the talents of craftsmen at Mountain Laurel Handrail. The rails and balusters feature natural overtones to enhance the home’s easy and relaxing feeling. All in all, this indoor space expresses the homeowners’ message perfectly. On Lake Time!

Blocky newel posts secure the post-to-post railing system. The linear handrails frame sinuous balusters crafted from branches covered in bark. It’s like bringing a splash of the outdoors in. As you can see in the picture, the railings are both functional and decorative.

What’s more, the ideal railings for a lakefront retreat should be easy to maintain and weather resistant. Mountain Laurel branches need little maintenance and withstand the moist environment of coastal or lakefront homes. That means more fun and less work for you.

Lake houses are all about easiness and enjoyment. In keeping with that principle, the homeowners’ decorated the interior with simplicity in mind. A few plaques with playful inscriptions and a couch with comfy pillows and cushions highlight the wall under the lake time balcony railing.

Here, the homeowners selected a soothing color theme. Cool blue hues are on spot with the coastal look. Additionally, light beige walls add to room’s breeziness. The railings stained in walnut add a touch of contrasting warmth.

Clearly, this indoor space along with its lake time balcony railing, opens up to a sunny day on the beach! To make the interior of your lakeside retreat as eye-catching as the view, consider Mountain Laurel railings.

When the homeowner sent pictures, this is what he said:

We love it and get lots of compliments!

This homeowner opted to go with pine lumber on the handrail to match the pine shiplap on the interior walls. The newel post at the bottom of the stairs is set to the outside of the tread. This makes the bottom rail of this stair handrail set outside the stair stringer. This is the preferred installation method since it hides the unsightly triangle gap created if the handrail is set in line with the stair stringer and has to sit on the leading edge of the nosing of the tread instead. The homeowner wanted a stair banister to match the handrails for this stairs and since the handrails are of branches, of course that the banister should be as well. The carpenters on this project did a skillful job of joining the mountain laurel sticks that were provided to them. I especially love the step up about halfway up the stairs. The on site carpenters are definitely proficient woodworkers to recognize the innate utility of each piece of wood. A custom piece from Mountain Laurel Handrails will add unique style to your home. This incredible branch banister is the unique architectural element that defines this stair. At the top of the stairs, you’re greeted by a Mountain Laurel Handrail in the sunburst pattern with a Mountain Laurel Newel Post to finish the installation.

Though the long railing was quite a challenge for the carpenters, we are quite happy with them. Thank you.

— Jody

Hi James,

Attached are 3 pictures. I really don’t feel they do your beautiful handiwork justice because the railing is going down a basement stair and the lighting is not too good. If you ever wanted to come over and photograph for yourself that would be wonderful. We’ve used the wall over the railing as a kind of Folk Art Gallery and everyone always comments on the railing. Let me know what you think. I loved looking at the new website. The home in Vermont is just gorgeous.

The end piece which “swoops” is my favorite feature. We love it.

And Now For Something Completely Different

Like they say on Monty Python…

If you missed the first post of the finished, but not yet installed, custom designed and built wavy stair banister, then you’re in for a real treat today since I have the pictures of the installed piece. It came out AWESOME! There’s no doubt that this is a one-of-a-kind, work-of-art that was a real collaboration between the homeowner’s vision and the master woodworkers in our workshop.

Wavy Wood Banister Installed
Wavy Wood Banister Installed

On the left is the view from the bottom of the staircase looking up towards the landing. This is the longest of two runs of the banister. This piece was about 11′ long. The other piece was much shorter for only two steps at the top of the landing. Careful measurements and communication allowed our workshop to draw a model from which a cardboard template was cut out. The template was stepped off over the length of the blank piece. Once the lines were drawn on the lumber, the power tools came out and sawdust and wood chips started flying! A circular saw and belt sander were used for rough cutting of the blank, which was then finished to the desired 2″ diameter. The homeowner is going to stain and finish it once her color scheme is final.

Here’s what the homeowner had to say about her project:

The banister is finally up! YEY!!! It looks great. See the pictures. I think in reality it looks even nicer than on the pictures …. I have to finish my stairs first and then I will finish the banister. I think I may tint it to golden oak color and put teak oil. Thanks for all your help!
